Following accusations of Pornhub showing videos of rape and underage sex, Mastercard and Visa will block their customers from using credit cards for purchases on the site.
Approximately one week ago, Nicholas Kristof of The New York Times alleged that Pornhub depicts revenge pornography, and video taken without the consent of participants. Kristof writes, “[Pornhub’s] site is infested with rape videos. It monetizes child rapes, revenge pornography, spy cam videos of women showering, racist and misogynistic content, and footage of women being asphyxiated in plastic bags”.
Visa and Mastercard join American Express, and the online payment service PayPal in their decision to stop processing payments to Pornhub. In the days following this development, Pornhub has announced steps to protect against images of abuse, non consensual activity, and underage models on the site. A ban on unverified users uploading material has also been implemented.
